An objective assessment of reflected sunlight by season and time of day
Reflections from solar panels have attracted growing attention in recent years. Their potential effects on nearby homes, roads and other surroundings should be assessed through simulations that account for the season and time of day, rather than subjective impressions.
We use 3D models and simulations to identify where reflected light reaches and prepare materials that objectively assess its effects.
The model includes surrounding buildings and identifies potential receiving points, such as residential windows, so that stakeholders can evaluate the results on a shared basis.
Where an impact is identified, we can continue through to mitigation proposals, including screening, to help the project move forward in practice.
Our services
Our PV glare assessment examines reflected sunlight from solar panels toward nearby buildings and roads. Using a 3D model of the plant, surrounding buildings and selected receiving points, we simulate when and where solar reflections may occur with our own tools. Images and numerical results provide a shared basis for reviewing potential impacts.
To scope a solar reflection simulation, please share the project location, proposed layout and the points of concern, such as residential windows or nearby roads. Deliverables include SketchUp model data, reflection simulation images and a numerical report. Where impacts are expected, we can also consider screening and other mitigation options. Discuss a PV glare assessment with ANE.
3D layout modeling
We create a 3D model of the plant in SketchUp based on the proposed layout.
We also select locations that may receive reflected sunlight, such as nearby residential windows.
Surrounding buildings are modeled approximately using information available through sources such as Google Earth Street View.
Reflected-light simulation by season and time
We carry out reflected-light simulations using our own tools.
The assessment shows when and where reflections may occur, taking seasonal and time-of-day variations into account.
Identifying impacts and preparing evidence
We identify affected locations and prepare visual materials and numerical reports showing the completed project and its potential impacts.
Where necessary, we can also propose screening or other measures to reduce those impacts.
